This soap is inspired by the pest masks worn by doctors during Digerdöden, and by the protection people once believed was carried in powerful spices and resins. In a time when disease was thought to spread through corrupted air, strong aromas were used as a shield- meant to cleanse, protect, and restore balance.

The scent is built around this historical idea. Orange peel, cloves, cinnamon, myrrh, pepper, and ginger, along with other spices, echo the mixtures once placed inside the beaked masks of plague doctors. Warm, resinous, and vibrant, these ingredients were valued for their purifying presence and their ability to push back what was feared and unseen.

The soap itself is made using one of my traditional methods. It is crafted from lard from free-range pigs, prized for its gentle, nourishing qualities, and high-polyphenol olive oil from southern Italy, known for its richness, stability, and skin-loving properties. Together, they create a firm, creamy soap that reflects old-world craftsmanship and durability.

This is not a promise of protection in the medieval sense- but it is worth noting that the Pest has not returned in over 500 years, so this tradition has at least not proved to be bad for us. Today, what remains is comfort, warmth, and a connection to the long human history of scent, ritual, and care - transformed into a soap made for everyday use.
